november 2024
Immediately after the placing of the Roman Mask of Andreas Hetfeld in April 2020, it could not be ignored by Veur-Lent in Nijmegen. Many visitors shared numerous photo's of the image which ended up in everyone wanting to actually see it. As a beacon on the Island, it brought people together in a time of fear and polarization.
The rich illustrated boek shows how the Roman Mask of Andreas Hetfeld grew within a short time to the Face of Nijmegen. Roman Expert Paul van der Heijden tells the story of the original mask and places The Face of Nijmegen in the oeuvre of the artist. Andreas Hetfeld himself brings broadly the design and making process in picture. He shows also what The Face of Nijmegen has opened up in the city.
Architect Chris Poulissen and poet and classicist Piet Gerbrandy shed light on the image and look though the eyes of the Mask to the city and her history.
'This book is a document to the present and the past in the form of a giant sculpture that the city of Nijmegen a face has given.
